Within a serene campus in Hudson Wisconsin, Burkwood Treatment Center helps those derailed by substance abuse and mental health issues find a better way of life.

At Burkwood, we specialize in co-occurring disorders, we recognize that treatment must be holistic in nature and that recovery is only possible through the integrated treatment of chemical dependency with mental health issues. Because addiction (and particularly dual diagnosis challenges) can so devastate in all areas of life, treatment at Burkwood is tailored to restore the health and well being of the mind, body and spirit.

We recognize the need for affordable care, and strive to provide cost effective behavioral health treatment of the highest quality to all who walk through our doors.

A Place to Make a Lifelong Change

In a beautiful environment and in very comfortable living accommodations, dually diagnosed men and women at Burkwood enjoy the serenity and peace of their natural environment as they meditate on a new beginning. Located next to a lovely stream and near willow State Park, residents at Burkwood will often hike into state parkland for guided 2 hour journeys of natural enjoyment and exploration.

Residents at Burkwood have the time, free from distraction and stress, to focus on bettering themselves, and can do so in an environment of peace and serenity – a place well suited to healing and reflection.

Emotional growth and recovery can take it out of a person, though, and so although clients at Burkwood work hard through structured and very therapeutic days, clients also have time each day to decompress a little, and enjoy one of the many sporting events offered, or to partake in a recreational activity, like a movie outing. Recreation and sporting time lets clients blow of a little steam, helping them to refocus for the next educational or therapeutic session of the day. They are also lots of fun!

Addiction Is a Disease for Life

At Burkwood, we welcome clients whether arriving for a first attempt at sobriety, or arriving after a relapse back to addiction. We recognize that as a disease for life that has no cure, people sometimes require repeated bouts of treatment over a lifetime to encourage ever longer periods of remission. You will learn new techniques and coping skills against temptation, as well as rediscover inner abilities and strengths that you'll need to stay sober over the long run. Because treatment needs for people with co-occurring disorders can be great, Burkwood Treatment Center employs a wide array of licensed professionals, and staff remain on duty at the center 24 hours per day.

Staff members include:

  • Doctors
  • Psychiatrists
  • Nurses
  • Therapists
  • Case managers
  • Nutritionists

  • Chemical dependency treatment that integrates counseling with education
  • Intensive, supportive counseling and support groups
  • Physical health evaluations and psychiatric assessment
  • Medication monitoring
  • Counselor led individual goal planning sessions
  • Life skills training based on vocational and education counseling
  • Family therapy and services
  • An emphasis on relapse prevention and readiness for temptation
  • Continuing after care, with referrals to outside organizations as needed, and across the country
  • Assistance in planning for discharge.

Days are very structured and quite busy. A normal day might begin with meditation time and group therapy during the morning, followed by workshops, lectures and community meetings during the afternoon.

Although group therapy is an invaluable tool in the recovery process, individual therapy with a trained therapist is essential. All clients at Burkwood will meet at least once weekly with an individual therapist. Native Americans may choose to receive individual counseling from a certified Native American counselor.

Not a 12 steps Facility

Although we recognize the utility and power of the 12 steps of groups like AA or NA, at Burkwood, we also recognize that the 12 steps do not work for everyone. Clients will choose what recovery systems and program elements work best for them.
