Island View

Island View is an intensive treatment program and college prep school for adolescents needing more structured care and psychiatric or therapeutic support than is offered at a therapeutic emotional growth boarding school.

Island View is a place that can make a difference, even when other programs haven’t. Adolescents come to Island View when in need of 24 hour supervision and a greater intensity of therapeutic care than offered at a wilderness program or therapeutic boarding school. Teens also come to our program after emotional stabilization in a hospital based facility.

The Island View Program consists of:

  • A very structured daily schedule
  • An accredited and rigorous college prep school
  • In-residence psychiatric services (psychiatrist on staff)
  • A strong recreational therapy component
  • A positive peer driven modeling environment

The program combines rigorous therapeutics with therapist guided pro social peer modeling.

Island View has been helping deeply troubled teens since 1994, and keeping outcome success records since our earliest days. Between 81% and 84% of parents questioned after program graduation say that Island View made a substantial improvement in their son or daughter.

Island View’s success is based on an integrated delivery of 5 distinct treatment components, which are:

  1. Psychiatric services
  2. Recreation and activity therapy and services
  3. A pro social peer modeling milieu
  4. Academics
  5. Therapy

Few adolescent treatment programs can match the intensive delivery of these 5 program elements in a seamless and integrated manner. Island View is a very special place and for deeply troubled teens, it is a life-changing place.

An Industry Leader

Island View was one of the first adolescent institutions to combine a comprehensive medical and therapeutic program with a pro social peer modeling milieu, and we remain respected industry leaders to this present day.

Island View is accredited, endorsed or licensed by the following organizations:

  • JCAHO
  • The Utah Dept. of Human Services
  • The Northwest Association of Accredited Schools
  • The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs
  • The Utah Board of Education

Individualized Care

Every student receives a battery of psychological and psychosocial tests, including:

  • A psychiatric assessment
  • A psychosocial assessment
  • An academic assessment
  • A recreational skills assessment
  • A substance abuse assessment
  • A nutritional assessment
  • A medical examination

Our thorough and comprehensive testing process done soon after admittance helps us to understand the challenges facing each teen, so that we may devise a therapeutic plan that will offer solutions. The testing and assessment process requires a multidisciplinary team, working in concert, including:

  • A psychiatrist
  • Pediatricians
  • Nurses
  • Psychologists
  • Educators
  • Other specialists as needed

Psychiatric Services

Many students at Island View benefit from an integrated neurobiological and emotional growth targeted treatment plan. Many students face emotional problems from the symptoms of neurological disorders, and so treatment must integrate psychiatric services and emotional growth therapy to untie both ends of the knot.

Island View is proud to offer every student the services of our full time psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner. The psychiatric team will prescribe and evaluate a medication management plan as appropriate.

Therapeutic Program

Masters and doctoral level therapists engage each student in an individually relevant program of therapy. Therapeutic interventions include:

  • Individual therapy sessions
  • Group therapy
  • Family therapy
  • DBT therapy

The therapeutic program is designed to help each student improve interpersonal, communication, identity and relationship skills. Students are also assisted in overcoming negative thought and behavior patterns and in learning healthy ways to deal with stress, anger and conflict.

Based on individual need and want, and determined from an initial and continuing assessment driven treatment plan, each student may participate in additional specialty therapy groups, including:

  • Men’s or women’s issues groups
  • Addiction or substance abuse group (12 steps, cognitive therapy and relapse prevention education and discharge planning)
  • Grief program
  • Adoption group
  • Social skills improvement group
  • Expressive art therapy group

Academics

Every student receives an array of academic assessment tests (the Iowa Battery of tests) within 5 days of program entry. This testing process helps educators design an individually suitable learning plan and curriculum.

Classroom sizes range from 8 to 18 students; small class sizes allowing teachers the extra time needed to focus individually on every student. Every teacher is state certified for secondary instruction. The larger student body at Island View (as compared to other adolescent treatment center programs) allows students to be placed in classes filled with other students at a same grade level.

The school program operates year round, 5 days a week, and is college prep based.

Recreation

Many students at Island View need assistance in learning how to enjoy pro social and healthy recreational activities. Many students come into the program after an extensive period of engagement in solitary pursuits, such as video game playing or internet chatting or involvement in other antisocial or even dangerous activities.

All students are encouraged to improve their physical health and fitness with the assistance of certified fitness instructors. A healthy body can greatly improve a troubled teen’s self image and self confidence.

Students will also participate in a variety of healthy and enjoyable recreational activities, such as:

  • Movie, bowling or swimming outings in the community
  • Team sports
  • Camping or hiking
  • Skiing or snowboarding
  • A ROPES course
  • River Running
  • Many others

In addition to teaching teens how to enjoy life in healthy and appropriate ways, the recreational program builds trust between group members, builds self confidence and improves self expression.
